Marx & Gutherz, located in Altrolau, Bohemia (now Stara Role in the Czech Republic), made decorative and household porcelain and coffee and tea sets from 1876 to 1889. Lazarus Straus & Sons, an American ceramics importer, helped finance the company. Marx & Gutherz was a porcelain decorating house before 1884 when it began producing porcelain. In 1899, Oscar’s brother Edgar Gutherz bought out Maximillian Marx’s interest. The new firm became Oscar and Edgar Gutherz. Edgar was the former New York and Rudolstadt Pottery manager in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany. The company exported hand-painted wares as well as “white” ware to the United States.
